Felix Schoeller to complete the final rebuild phase of paper machine 1 in the 1st quarter of 2010
The first phase of the two-stage rebuild of PM 1 was successfully completed at the beginning of this year. A film press was installed on PM 1, a key technological component for producing online-coated inkjet papers, which generated significant efficiency gains in the production of these imaging papers. At the same time, a highly efficient reeler and a packaging unit that meets the specifications for decor papers were also installed in preparation for the now imminent second phase of investment in PM 1.
The aim of the second phase of the rebuild is to enable PM 1 to expand its current range and produce decor papers and specialties for the decor business unit. As well as manufacturing LPL and print base papers, the machine will also produce our new resin-saving decor papers (RSP®). The size of the machine means that the main focus in terms of market positioning will be on large production batches.
The investment in this rebuild is part of Technocell Dekor’s honouring its promise to the world decor paper market that it would continue to come up with innovative solutions and work consistently on increasing the efficiency of its processes.
From the 2nd quarter of 2010, PM 1, as the world’s first "combi-machine," will be able to manufacture both decor papers and inkjet and technical specialty papers. This will ensure flexible, demand-based utilization of the machine’s capacity in the future. In the past, this machine was able to produce raw photographic base papers only.
Dr. Bernhard Klofat, CEO of the Felix Schoeller Group emphasised: "The rebuild of PM 1 will strengthen Schoeller’s two business units - decor and imaging – and the Osnabrück mill. We will produce our papers more flexibly and at optimal cost, giving us a competitive edge."
